I was under the impression that the lubricant was actually applied to
the platter surfaces during manufacture to lessen the possible head to
platter damage during start up and stopping.

Whoa! How on earth would platters stick together?
Multiple platter HDs had RW heads BETWEEN the platters - remember?
Heads sticking to platters - you betcha!

Correct - there were "parking" routines for that.

Well, there was one other sometimes solution:
Bang on the side of the computer case on startup!
