 Like you, I doubt that the BIOS is involved at all, but the thinking
 is perhaps not far off target.  The better firewalls will load the
 driver early enough in the boot process so that all communication
 will be addressed, as soon as the potential exists.  That would include
 system processes communicating with each other locally...again obviously
 very early in the boot.

 I don't think that necessarily requires entries to the MBR, but some
 programs might write to the MBR.

 Still, the nature of the firewall's activity at this early stage in the
 boot (including the MD5 fingerprinting authentication), suggests to me
 that if the firewall is not properly removed, curing the problems created
 by its remnants may not be a simple matter to correct.  Another case in
 point why backups are important.
