It fools you - or at least, your brain fools the conscious you.

I'm writing this in a central DOS window about 1/4 the size of the 
Desktop;  if I stare at the My Docs icon,  I can see and recognise 
the DOS window and all this text with peripheral vision - but I 
can't actually read a single letter of it while focused on the 
icon top-left.

If some programme swaps the words in the text for others of the 
same length as I fixate on the icon,  I will not notice the 
changes.

The same illusion applies to my vision of this room;  I can be 
sure of the bit my fovea is dealing with (an area the size of my 
thumbnail when my arm is extended),  leaving the rest of my view 
of the room as a decaying `vision' supported by peripheral vision 
but lacking in detail.

The computer, by comparison, will faithfully report its full 
screen if I PrtSc it - and it has equal access to the value of it 
every pixel's status.

Better still, you can recognise a particular 3D tetris piece no 
matter how twisted around it might be - without turning your head 
- and then manipulate it in 3D to fit the puzzle in a very short 
space of time.

Massive parallel processing usimg neurons dedicated to object 
identity provides this power;  current estimates of speed have the 
brain making new synapsal connections at more than a million times 
a second - providing a totally dynamic network for whatever 
processing runs over it to support your `consciousness'....
