        I see no difference in the "chain". I use a W/L Dlink, you use
  a NIC. We both connect to an ISP, dynamically, here it is DHCP. My
  connection is ON full time but I shut down the system at night and
  often during the day. When I connect, it is just a matter of telling
  the cable, via the router, Hey, I am here. I think that you use the
  same "chain" when you connect. You would be connected full time too
  if you left your system ON.

        Again, same here. I could use a NIC and connect to the cable
  directly but I like the convenience of W/L and router so that both
  systems here can be ON at the same time. You say that TCP/IP is the
  protocol " de rigueur " for Windows. Are you then using both TCP/IP
  and PPPoE at the same time as a requirement from 1st, Windows, 2nd,
  Verizon fibre optic ? As you can see, not all is clear in my mind.

        There is a bit of confusion in regards to the new TPs. The
  MultiMedia was blank and I had to select from a panoply of devices.
  There were no CD-ROM listed so I did not select anything. Looks like
  we are going to get them with nothing in the UltraBay slots. We will
  have to go to an IBM outlet and get what we need later. In the mean
  time, only XP Pro is loaded and I will have to load what is needed
  via a W/L network. Wish me luck.

        Next I read you, I will be in Montreal for the week.
