Hmmm..  Good idea..  but no can do.  I don't want to risk messing up
something related to hardware.  The W2K pc is an old Dell Optiplex GX1.
Don't most older Dell's have proprietary HDD connectors?

AVG will be fine..  But I might consider AntiVir as a recommendation.
Here's why..  When I uploaded a few suspicious .exe's to VirusTotal, it was
the AntiVir scan that detected them as malicious components.

This is not the first time this person has had this problem with the pc.
Apparently the "supplier" had taken it back, and "cleaned it up".  But no
sooner had my friend connected to the internet, she was getting pop-ups and
crap. Her browsing history was extrememly minimal; only a handful of
legitimate sites.  So the problem was already lurking on the pc before she
got it, and the techies that claimed to have fixed it didn't do a thorough
job.

My guess is that the Sep'05 Rollup was the key security fix.  And my the
online scans with TrendMicro (it detected 1) and Symantec (it identified 6),
allowed me to target the specific files and delete them.   Sofar no pop-ups!
