===================
Much snipped----------------------------

RF> That's the same question that Alan (and others) recently raised however,
RF> in the opposite sense ("why wouldn't they?"). The answer is obvious.
RF> It's all about maximizing profits. They spend less money on software
RF> development if they design for only one platform.

RF> Unfortunately, this only expedites forced obsolescence, to which
RF> perhaps the vast majority of consumers have become all too well
RF> acclimated.

RF> JE> I repeat: The average John Doe using a home computer hasn't the
RF> JE> foggiest idea of how to circumvent the problems of using 98SE and
RF> JE> earlier versions and upgrading peripherals. Tis much easier on his
RF> JE> mind, and often pocket book, to just upgrade to XP - often even if it
RF> JE> means buying a later computer.

RF> JE> Case in point: Recently I was called to "fix" a computer loaded with XP
RF> JE> because it was so terribly slow. Turned out he bought the (replaced)
RF> JE> system from law firm for $275. It only had a 10Gb Hd, 128 Mb of shared
RF> JE> memory. When I quoted him a price for upgrading to a 80Gb Hd (one of
RF> JE> the smaller ones my supplier caries) upgrading to 1 Gb memory (his son
RF> JE> wants to be a gamer) and adding a DVD - CDRW drive, he balked. It would
RF> JE> have been less expensive for him if he had purchased a new system in
RF> JE> the beginning.
RF> JE> This is the situation many home users find themselves in.

RF> Ignorance is often costly, and his purchase, based on his stated
RF> needs, was clearly unwise. It could have become worse though.

RF> I know you're not a gamer, but 1GB of shared memory on the system
RF> you're describing isn't going to make a gaming machine. A video
RF> card is indispensable, and I suspect the processor is too slow to
RF> make it practical at all. I would have personally probably deemed
RF> it impossible. After all, if the results are disappointing, it's
RF> your fault. ;-)

RF> That having been said, your client may well make another mistake
RF> with a retail purchase, depending on whether or not he buys an
RF> entry level machine. As you say, it can surely be had for less than
RF> he spent plus your quote, but it won't be a gamer either. A real
RF> gaming machine is going to cost more than he would have spent with
RF> you.

You are correct.
I pulled a boo boo. His son is mildly retarded and really only wants to
play some of the simpler games - not the more sophisticated power
hungry ones - at least not yet :-). Also, the man is an attorney and
made it a (bragging?) point to let me know he was working on a Supreme
Court case! (paper work all over his desk). I agree, it would have made
more sense to buy a new computer. but I felt it a bit more judicious to
just let things ride. I do not want nor need the money bad enough to
work with people like that although I feel for the boy. He is about 6'6"
tall, 20 years of age, and works as a painter's helper and does a pretty
good job. He and his employer (nearby neighbor) just repainted the
interior of my brother's house and did a bang up good job. Of course his
employer, Jesse, has to closely supervise him.
Jay
