I was going to reluctantly suggest you start over again. :(
I don't know how big your HD is but if your XP can use half
the disk and you have room enough to do what you want with it
then rebuild your Linux system on the other half.

I will offer you my opinion because I've built and pulled down
many Linux setups over the years and hope my advice is useful.

The biggest directory in Linux is "/usr" and it expands as you
build the system. You don't need a separate partition for it
because "/" will include /usr, /root, /etc, /boot, and all other
core directories including /var.

I have a Mandriva setup and being a nosy sod i install just
about every thing. :)

The combined size of my "/" partition is less than 3 Gig.
If you can spare a little more you won't go far wrong.

I have a separate partition for "/home" because it stores
all user configuration files and in the event of disaster
i don't want to destroy the users setup.

Next i have a separate partition for "/local" this is where
i install all third party applications so again in the event
of tragedy i don't have to start looking for all the stuff
that i have down loaded etc.

The last partition is called "/opt" this is where i store all
backups. Any scripts i have pains takenly worked on or tar files
down loaded or deb, RPMs., or "/root" stuff i don't want to loose.

Last is swap.

Now in the event that something goes wrong or i wish to try out
a new distro i have no qualms about formatting "/" because i can
quickly rebuild the system.

So "df" on this machine looks like this, but remember to ignore
/usr and /var because they are covered in the 3 Gig "/" partition
it is just my way of doing things on this system.
