Ärende: Video Pause
===================

Hi Marty:

MB>CS> That is unusual. I have a very old motherboard and it has an AGP
MB>CS> slot.

MB>It is from HP model number 533w. I bought it 2 years ago.

I'm not familiar with many motherboards by HP, but the ones I have seen
have an expansion plane which sits vertical to the main board. And
you're correct, unless you purchase an adaptor they usually have no
facility for AGP, only PCI. Again from memory, HP motherboards usually
have an on board video chip. The on board video can be activated -
deactivated from BIOS setup. Does yours have an on board (built in)
video chip? If it does, why not try removing the new video card and run
with the on board video. Probably won't work very well for gaming but
it may help you to localize the problem.

MB>CS> If your hard drive is formatted to FAT-32, you can run a copy of
MB>CS> Scandisk from Win98 or WinME. Works fine.

MB>Just the recovery part of the disk is formated in fat-32 the rest of
MB>it is NTFS.

Yes, typical HP recovery scheme. The "hidden" recovery partition is
formatted to FAT-32 while the remainder of the drive is NTFS. Upon
bootup and during POST you can choose to run recovery. Of course if you
do it, it very nicely wipes out everything on the drive and restores it
to factory specs.

MB>CS> If the system was working OK prior to uninstalling NAV, we have
MB>CS> to start thinking that maybe removing NAV had something to do
MB>CS> with it. At first it appeared to be an IRQ conflict - the
MB>CS> symptoms, "pausing" especially when subjecting video to lots of
MB>CS> work like when playing a video intensive game, usually point to
MB>CS> an IRQ "step on" or conflict. Could also be your video card is
MB>CS> failing. Didn't you say the fan on your video card was not
MB>CS> working? Did you try swapping out the video card? Sorry, I
MB>CS> don't remember if you mentioned that you did.

MB>Yes I did say that, and thats where I see most of the pauseing is
MB>when playing games. I took the old card out and replaced it with a
MB>new one. Both were from Nvidea. I thought both were the same model,
MB>but they came in the same type box. The new one is a geforce4 mx
MB>4000 PCI and it didn't have a fan installed on it. I took off the
MB>fan that wasn't working on the old card, and I will be looking for a
MB>new fan to put on it, that is if I can find one that small.

The old card may have suffered damage when the fan wasn't working.
Those cards overheat very quickly especially during video intensive
games. You can test the card first in another machine if one's
available.

MB>CS> Norton anything is very difficult to uninstall. I have had
MB>CS> problems uninstalling NSW and NAV where I had to run rnav2003
MB>CS> and symcln. And as I mentioned to August, even after doing
MB>CS> that, I found and removed 35 left over registry entries. I just
MB>CS> can't imagine how removing NAV or even leaving some of it behind
MB>CS> could cause the problem you're experiencing.

MB>I ran both of those as well and both never found anything. When I
MB>loaded up regedit I did a search for norton and found a bunch of
MB>references to it, so I deleted them all. Then I went and did a
MB>search for symetic and found a bunch more entries and got rid of
MB>those as well. I rebooted a couple of times and it does seem to be
MB>running faster now, but the pause is still there, just not as
MB>noticable now like it was.

I don't think removing Norton AV is the reason for the pausing. But it's
good that you removed all references to it in the registry. Still think
it's a hardware problem of some sort - either related to defective
hardware or an IRQ conflict.

Regards.
