Much less than you might think... have you tried a recent Live CD
version of something like Ubuntu (or Kbuntu) lately?

In my opinion, for the large number of people who just want something
that works right out of the box letting them surf the Web, do email, and
read and compose MS Word compatible documents, most of the standard
Linux distributions (Fedora, SuSE, Ubuntu, etc) are pretty much there.

There's hardware support for much (though not all) of the standard PC
video, sound, NIC, printers, etc... and an interface that is pretty
usable immediately, without needing to drop down to text mode to edit
configuration files.

I recently installed Edubuntu (a variant of Ubuntu with more software
pre-installed for K-12 education) onto a clone P3 1 GHz system and left
it on the back table in my computer lab... it installed without problem,
and was immediately usable by all the children that wandered over... as
soon as I pointed out that the Start Menu equivalent was on the top, and
that the Fox icon (for Firefox) replaced the Internet Explorer icon they
were in business.

Linux has made big strides in instant-usability over the past couple of
years... as far as I can see, the biggest barriers against mass adoption
of Linux on business and home desktops now are user inertia and a lack
of mass marketing muscle rather than technical limitations of Linux.
