NAV can be a real problem to update or to reinstall.  Usually, you have 
to run the Symantec registry cleaner before you can reinstall NAV or it 
will freeze up or just refuse to install.  Very poor programming and 
customer support from Symantec.  Not just with NAV but also with their 
other offerings.  I've pretty much given up on all their software and 
refuse to purchase any new versions.

I do not recommend AVG as it hasn't done well in independent tests.  
Also, they are currently beta testing their free version 7.0 which will 
be released around Nov 15th.  So you might want to wait for version 7.0 
if you really want to try it.

I'm using AVAST - also free (www.avast.com) and have not had any 
problems with it.  BTW, your statement above about doing without AV 
software is not very wise.  All it takes is one serious infection to 
wipe out your data.

As far as I know, DirectX 9.0C is included with SP2 for XP.  Also you 
didn't look very hard because 9.0C is available for download at the MS 
DirectX download page:
