Gmail (like other webmail setups) are available anywhere that the user
has access to a browser. I don't have first-hand experience with AOL, so
I can't make direct comparisons to it, but some things I like about
Gmail:

-- it offers the user huge amounts of storage (currently about 2.7 GB) 
compared to most other free webmail services

-- it includes built-in spam filtering

-- there are add-ins available to let users use unused email space as an 
online hard drive

-- there are instructions online for how to set it up to use with 
Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Apple Mail, etc so that when you're at
your home computer you can use it the faster and more powerful e-mail
client software rather than Google's web-based interface

-- it was able to import my entire address book, so I have access to 
everyone's email address (and phone # and snail-mail address) wherever
in the world I happen to be.

-- having a Gmail account lets you use others of the growing number of 
Google on-line applications, like their spreadsheet and more.

The interface is a bit of an experiment... it organizes messages into
threads, including both received and sent messages... when you open the
latest message, the previous ones in the thread appear as cascading
windows behind it. This is not immediately obvious but can be very
useful. On the other hand, there doesn't appear to be a way to organize
messages into folders, which I would find useful.

I'm currently back and forth between Vancouver and our Sechelt house--
in Sechelt, I've left a notebook running Ubuntu Linux; I find Gmail a
very convenient email service to use in that context.

(Note that you can't just sign-up for Gmail; you need to be referred by
a current Gmail user... if you're interested-- and you have nothing to
lose by trying it out-- let me know).
