Ärende: slowdown of late
========================
On or about: 09-10-06 01:58, Charles Angelich did engage James Bradley
regarding, but not limited to: slowdown of late

 CA> 123ecb6a5563
 CA> win95

CA> My W2K machine would stay turned on 24/7 for months at a time
CA> and usually was only rebooted because of some change I made
 CA> that required a reboot. :-)

I believe I have one rougue program that is to blame for all my instability
here. I moved both PnP cards - a PCI TV/AM/FM, and an ISA modem - to another
machine, and a few of the same issues followed them. The worst with the modem,
is it doesn't like to hang up, or use CID. (Yes, with and without DTR, or RTS,
or whatever it is labeled.) The TV tuner crashes, suggesting the program may be
debugging when I throw the Task Man at it. (I wish! ;-)

I keep returning to my quote. "In Linux, it may not blink at a
missconfiguration, where in Windows, it is more likely to take the whole stack
of cards down for the same setting."

JB> To say you are running a 2GHz FSB?

CA> Yes I am but it's an AMD on-die memory controller replacing the
CA> FSB to be honest. HP advertises it as 2000+FSB. Some sources
CA> quote 2400+ for this AMD machine.

WOA!!! The last I payed attention, 100MHz fsb was a hard won victory. I knew
there were a sight faster than that, but...

JB> network to be much more responcive, where this W2K duo
JB> seems to take forever before I can even log onto the other

CA> Not sure what is slowing you down at login but I found that my
CA> W31 was more responsive while online if I kept the MTU a bit
 CA> smaller than recommended.

"Mean Time Units?" Something like a "Timeslice"? I'm still convinced, a Master
Browser could settle the arguments in short order. I worked on timeslices with
W3.11, but I could get the BBS to perform at all, only if I did something
menial alongside it. More often, it would just grind to a halt, and hang up on
callers. CBV wouldn't run at all.

CA> Yes, I too feel much is "burried" under layers of menus that
CA> aren't all that memorable (at least to me).

I guess my biggest beef there, is how those menus under sub-menus keep
changing. I know MS claims they are streamlining all the time, to make the
chore more adherent to their lowest-common-denominator. bla-bla-bla... Maybe,
offering a Wf/WG-3.11 option, could streemline an old phart's transition, but
now there has been such a number of versions, with each changing everytime...
(Well, maybe not ME. |-)

JB> B-I-L how to assign the swap to another drive, he came up
JB> with a blank on 2K, and he is an IT tech, who supervises N.

CA> Start, Settings, Control Panel, System, Advanced, Performance
 CA> Options, Change.

<Chuckle> Ya, I found it a minute after he left.

 JB> Custer had it coming

CA> Yes, AAMOF he did have it coming.

AAMOF: AMD Anonymous, Or Fry? <G>

... War doesn't determine who's right. Merely who's left.
