RF> RF> JE> What constitutes a "newer machine"? My Toshiba laptop, about 3-4
years
RF> RF> JE> old had a new MB installed about a year ago. A week or so ago MS
now
RF> RF> JE> claims the OS is invalid. From what you say above I'm going to be
RF> RF> JE> forced to buy a new copy of XP! :-(

RF> RF> JE> I'm of the opinion that maybe Toshiba should furnish me a new OEM
copy
RF> RF> JE> of XPH.

RF> RF> JE> I'm just fixing to start the process of fighting this battle.

RF> RF> Are you citing rumor or fact?

RF> JE> Your Question above riles me somewhat.

RF> JE> First: I am not in the habit of citing rumors.

RF> JE> Second: Every statement I made above is fact.

RF> You didn't elucidate on "MS now claims that the OS is invalid". There
RF> are several possible implications, hence my question.

RF> JE> Third: The MB and memory in this Toshiba laptop had to be replaced
RF> JE> about
RF> JE> a bit more than a year ago BY an authorized Toshiba repair
RF> JE> shop.

RF> JE> Fourth: I hadn't been online with this laptop to amount to anything for
RF> JE> months till about a week ago. For the first time in ages I used
RF> JE> Internet Explorer rather than my preferred browser. In the
RF> JE> process up pops a message with words to this effect: "You may
RF> JE> be the
RF> JE> victim of a pirated copy of XP."

RF> JE> Fifth: Knowing the XP on this system was legit (unless the authorized
RF> JE> shop installed a bad copy) I started the process of getting
RF> JE> things corrected - hopefully. First I called MS. After several
RF> JE> calls trying to find the correct number to call I did get a
RF> JE> ph.# that
RF> JE> one of the operators gave me. This turned out to be a bummer.
RF> JE> They gave
RF> JE> me a url to go to. This url sent me to several places I could
RF> JE> buy a copy of XPP for a bit over $100.00.
RF> JE> Calling back gave me a different url which gave me places I
RF> JE> could buy
RF> JE> XPH for about $75. Even stating that it has "Student Copy"
RF> JE> on it! One more call sent me to

RF> JE> www.microsoft.com/genuine.diag

RF> JE> Going there and letting MS run their DIAG fixed the problem. I
RF> JE> now have XPH running on this laptop that resulted in 24 - YES 24
RF> JE> updates being installed - with no more nags about a pirated copy of XP
RF> JE> being on my laptop. 24 updates will give you an idea of how long ago it
RF> JE> had been since it was updated!

RF> JE> So now you have the facts - no rumors. I would suggest that anybody
RF> JE> with the same problem as I had go to www.microsoft.com/genuine.diag
RF> JE> first to try to solve the problem.

RF> So, you had a software glitch (one I believe had been reported on the
RF> web), and do not need to replace your copy of XP. The earlier responses
RF> by MS customer support reps (I personally would never call MS first about
RF> an OEM issue) are probably the SOP responses they are programmed to
RF> provide, and consequently potentially deceptive (e.g., "you need to buy
RF> another copy").

RF> As I indicated in my reply to Tom, I find no basis to believe that
RF> Microsoft is changing its practices regarding OEMs, and apparently
RF> you haven't either....although that wasn't clear from your original
RF> post. ;-)

RF> Regards,

RF> Robert Fowler

I failed to make it clear that the urls the MS reps gave me were MS
urls to internal MS locations!!!! These urls were supposed to send me to
the "diag" location in the first place. Had they been correct and sent
me there in the first place all would have been settled in just a very
few minutes. Had my XP been invalid I would have been knocking at the
local Toshiba repair shop's door first thing the next morning.

I had no software glitch!!!! The entire fiasco was precipitated by the
MB change.

Why not go to MS first? MS was the one that claimed XP was not valid in
the first place when I was quite sure it was. The official Toshiba
repair shop here has an excellent record and has had it for many years
and if the need arises I will not hesitate to use them again..
