There's a big lack of clarity about what 'ready for Vista' means, partly
caused by the fact that Vista can run in a number of modes:

- Aero: this is the full Vista experience, including 3D and transparency
effects in window title bars, in the task bar, and other places. It's
really quite attractive and reasonably well implemented. Aero requires a
video card with at least 128 MB of dedicated (i.e. not-shared) video RAM.

-- Windows Classic: this is Vista minus Aero; more or less a Win XP look 
and feel, though keeping the Vista improvements in the Start Menu

-- Windows Basic: this is a Windows 2000 look and feel.

As a result, systems may be defined as 'Vista Capable' that lack the
ability to run the Aero interface.

According to
http://www.vnunet.com/vnunet/news/2156438/microsoft-surprises-vista :

"A 'Vista Capable' PC will require at least an 800MHz processor, 512MB
of system memory, a DirectX 9 capable graphics card, a 40GB hard drive
with at least 15GB of free space, a DVD drive, and audio and internet
capabilities."

Users trying to run Vista on systems that are not Aero-capable will be
disappointed, in my opinion. I suspect that this will be an especial
problem for people with recent-model lower-priced laptops, most of which
are using Intel shared video RAM display adapters. It will be
interesting to see whether these models continue to be sold following
the Vista release next year.
