Ärende: HP Fan Noise

Whenever I turn on the HP box a loud noise comes on for a few seconds.

I figured it was a fan in the box, but my wife worried about it since
the computer came from the store as a DEMO that was on display in the
store.

One morning we went to the store and I asked a sales rep if I could shut
down and restart their 2 HP XP computers on the sales floor and they
said sure I could.

I shut each one down and turned them back on but there was NO unusual
noise coming from the cabinet like my box does.

SO

I (we) called 1 800 INVENT to talk to HP's Support and they had us shut
down XP and turn the computer back on.

Lo and behold there wasn't any loud noise from the box when we tried to
restart several times.

I thought that was strange, so I did my usual shut down routine for XP
and then I turned off the UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply) and
unplugged the AC Cord from the HP box that was plugged into the UPS.

When I restarted it this time I heard the noise that I always heard when
I turned the computer on to use it.

I noticed there is a LED on the back of the cabinet that glows while the
AC cord has power supplied to it.
I also noticed that the LED glows for a few seconds after I turn off the
UPS when I am donw using the computer.

I found out that if the LED has been off even for a second that the CPU
Fan runs at a High Speed until it decides all is well as far as CPU
temperature is concerned.

So

We went back to the store that afternoon and asked again to shut down
their 2 HP computers and unplug the AC cord until the LED on the back
went out and then plugging the cord back in and turning the box on.

Well Sirs, Each of those 2 HP boxes made the SAME noise as mine does
when I turn them back on after unplugging the AC cord long enough for
the LED to extinguish.

I suppose the LED is a POWER GOOD lamp or something or the other.  :-]


She's happy now that she heard the same noise come from those 2 HP demo
boxes at the store.
