TW>> It also DOES not recognize FAT formatted Harddrives as installed
 TW>> like Knoppix Does.

ml> as installed? yeah, not automatically... i had to go hunt up some stuff
ml> and figure it out... i think i had to edit fstab to put it in... i'm
ml> still trying to get my parallel port zip100 recognised... that takes a
ml> "faker" setup that makes it appear that the zip is on a scsi
ml> connection... this is much the same as the original win9x drivers
ml> did/do... i'm not sure, however, if my problem is due to my zip100 being
ml> chained behind a parallel port scanner and that's the next projext to
ml> try to get working, too :)

CS> What version were you running? Kubuntu and Ubuntu recognize both
CS> FAT and NTFS drives. I've never had a problem with either. No
CS> need to mess around with fstab or anything else.

i installed from the drapper drake live cd and while my FAT32 win98 partition
was listed, it was not accessible by any means... is wasn't listed in fstab or
mtab... i stuck it in fstab and can access it with all users...

CS> Not only Kubuntu\Ubuntu, but Mepis, DSL, Puppy, Xandros, Linspire,
CS> all recognize FAT drives without a problem.

CS> As for HP support, there's a long list of supported HP printers ie:
CS> inkjet and laser. Granted some configuration is required but they
 CS> work great.

yes, i had to dig and play a bit to find the one that worked best with my
printer... it wsn't listed exactly as a 990cse, though... IIRC, there were four
that i had to choose one from...

ml> in my case, i actually find it much easier than my first mandrake
ml> install ever was... it is also easier to work with than the debian woody
ml> and sarge installs that i've done... and red hat and several others...
ml> but i will say that they are getting a bit easier once i locate or get
ml> the tools i like to use installed (ie: midnight commander) O8-)

CS> I'm a great fan of Debian distros. Easy to work with and generally
CS> good at picking up newer hardware. Never tried Red Hat but have
CS> heard good things about it.

i'm more familiar with the layout and operation of red hat and those built on
red hat (like mandrake)... i've finally been able to get a decent handle on
what the few differences are here and there (ie: start up scripts locations)
and a few other things... but i've had to get at least midnight commander
working before i was able to really go snooping about to see what is what...

i had the same type of problem when win v2.0 came out and then v3.xx... not
much changed but there were a few... then there was win95 which was a big
change compared to v3... i've dabbled on ME (as in supporting someone having
problems) as well as XP... w2k and nt4 were also kinda the same but i had to
get a bit closer to them as that support was while i was coding and performing
commercial support, installation and repair...

needless to say, i got out of the biz about 6 or so years back and i've had a
much better life because of it... i'm definitely not as stressed and i can
actually sleep at night... LOL!!
