 I took a look at my Kubuntu live CD, and not only does it act as you
 described, but it also activates all sessions and logs the user into
 all sessions (tty1-6, as well as x-session) by default.  I attempted
 to logout (tty1), and was automatically logged back in.

 I'm unaware if the installation to hard drive behaves this way, but
 clearly this is a difference from the Knoppix, Mepis, Xandros and
 Linspire live CDs.

 The "equivalent" of File Manager shows all of my respective partitions,
 including FAT, and the partitions are all locked.  The "properties" shows
 that root priviledge is required for access.

 Well, for the sake of being on topic, we might conclude that the
 Ubuntu/Kubuntu live CD is not the ideal choice for one who wants
 a utility to use with his Windows setup, especially if he has to "sudo".

 As to whether or not Ubuntu/Kbuntu works well from the hard drive
 in a dual boot setup with Windows, regarding partition/file access
 on Windows partitions...I will defer to your experience.
