In my computer lab, we've recently transitioned from all-Win98SE to
nearly all Win2000 systems... (some of the systems have WinXP licenses,
but not all-- and I can use a single image on all of them, despite minor
hardware differences, so I chose to go with running Win2000 on the
XP-licensed systems to simplify maintenance, and to have all systems
looking and acting the same).

Along the way, I found quite a few installed programs that wouldn't run
on the WIN2000 systems... a bunch of game demos in particular, from a
variety of developers. (I allow kids to come in to play games after
school-- but control what sorts of games are available. No virtual
bloodshed in school).

The loss of games like EA's NHL2000 Demo (Win98 only) was balanced out
by the ability to run newer versions-- in this case, the NHL2002 Demo...
but the poor graphics card (NVidia Vanta) on our new systems keep us
from being able to install most current versions.

In the end, it all balanced out for us... and the ability to run
programs like Google Earth, which are Win2000/XP only, and the ability
to display PowerPoint presentations (using OpenOffice.org) with
relatively smooth transitions between slides has made the upgrades
worthwhile.
