I was running the beta of Windows Defender *AND* the Malicious Software
Removal Tool...  At one point, I started getting balloons popping up
stating that some file associated with MSRT had been modified and to run
the modified file.  I would run the modified file with the parameters as
specified in the balloon (hoping this would remedy the annoying balloon pop
ups), but the next time the computer booted, there was that balloon again.
In desperation, I deleted the Windows Defender but I still have to use
Regedit to be rid of all the Windows Defender keys....

I went to the Add / Remove Programs applet to trash the MSRT, but I can't
find it and I think the only way to be rid of it is to do a fresh install
of Windows 2000 Pro...

Not sure that this is going to happen.  It appears that M$ is tightening
their security and is, in effect, telling third party developers that their
software is proprietary.
