Hello Alan -

AZ>>> -- VMWare Workstation is the pay version... somewhat more
AZ>>> straightforward to use on a standalone system, but as far
AZ>>> as I can tell, doesn't offer most hobbyists anything that
AZ>>> Server doesn't offer for free.

AZ>>> Compared to Microsoft Virtual PC:

AZ>>> -- VMWare supports a wider variety of OS's as 'guest'
AZ>>> operating systems

CA>> How so? What OS does MS VPC not 'support'? I have MSDOS
CA>> v6.22, W31, W2K, and KNOPPIX all executing from within MS
CA>> VPC. With that range I cannot imagine what OS you believe
CA>> MS VPC will not support?

AZ> I've been able to make VPC (both the Windows version and
AZ> the originally-developed Mac version) work with some Linux
AZ> distributions but not others. While prior to MS buying it,
AZ> the original developer (Connectix) offered a version with a
AZ> pre-installed Red Hat image, not surprisingly, Microsoft
AZ> dropped that version and plays down Linux as a supported
AZ> 'guest OS'. As you've pointed out-- some Linux distros work
AZ> anyway... but not all.

Nothing personal but maybe you just don't understand linux well
enough to complete the install? I've read of as many failures
as I've read of successes. Enough to know that it's a bit of a
crap shoot when planning to install linux on ANY platform.
There are so very many variables that come into play.

AZ>>> -- has versions for both Windows and Linux

AZ>>> -- for users with broadband connections, the long list of
AZ>>> pre-made 'appliances' makes for an easy way to check out
AZ>>> a wide range of (mostly Linux) OS's without having to
AZ>>> take the time to install them.

CA>> I am of the opinion that linux is about the journey and
CA>> not about the desktop. Poking icons from KDE does not make
CA>> a person a "linux user" in the way that term is used at
CA>> most places they congregate.

CA>> Be aware that the person who creates this linux install
CA>> may or may not be completely competent and judging one as
CA>> being a better version of linux than another is somewhat
CA>> dependent on the person who created the 'appliance'.

CA>> With liveCDs out there for many of the more popular
CA>> distributions testing as a VMWare appliance is of less
CA>> importance I would think.

AZ>>> MS's VPC is OK... VMWare is (in my opinion) better. It's
AZ>>> nice that both now have free versions.

CA>> I've not used VMWare as yet but other than downloading
CA>> linux in a 'package' to try out I see no advantages to
CA>> VMWare and I don't have broadband for those gigabyte
CA>> downloads.

AZ> Note that dial-up users are a shrinking minority in both
AZ> Canada and the US...

There are far too many opinions presented as fact here on FIDO.
When I see statistics for dialup vs broadband I see something
like 50/50 or even dialup as the majority in the North American
continent. In Asiatic continents you would be correct but not
here and not now.

Not long ago it was hardware and everyone was supposed to have
gigabyte CPUs but that wasn't the case then and I'd wager isn't
the case even now. Many FIDO users mention systems with less
than a 1 gigabyte CPU but that is ignored as irrelevant. I
submit that it is NOT irrelevant.

AZ> and not the standard by which software-usability should be
AZ> measured...

Sorry to say you are becoming a bit of an elitist lately. Your
access to multiple systems and government owned broadband
networking has colored your views as to what the rest of us are
dealing with where WE are at. You are living in a 'corporate'
world of hardware and software where tax exempt purchasing
distorts the 'usefulness' of both software and hardware.

You are a good person who has gone the extra mile for many
people that I know of and I am one of those people. I
appreciate your willingness to share what you can share but you
need to be aware that your perspective is a bit distorted by
your circumstances.
