I'm a bit confused by what you say above but I think you said:

1) Putting the RAID card in the computer causes the computer to not boot.

2) You wanted to update the computer BIOS but the RAID card wouldn't 
allow the floppy to work.  Removing the card allowed you to update the BIOS.

3) You have a separate hard drive to boot from (you want to use the RAID 
array for more data storage?) but the RAID card isn't allowing the 
single hard drive to boot.

Most computers won't have a BIOS option to boot from RAID since the 
motherboard doesn't have a built-in RAID chipset (I have an old PII 
motherboard that has built-in SCSI and an option of a specific Adaptec 
RAID card).  Thus, the RAID card must have a BIOS extension on it to 
allow you to configure the system or use drivers that are installed 
during OS boot to "turn on" the card/array.  Check your documentation 
for how to access the card's BIOS to configure it.  What card is it? 
I'd be happy to download the manual and check it out.

It may also be that the card requires a specific PCI slot (66MHz. slot 
vs. old 33MHz. or PCI-X or PCI Express).  Are you sure you matched the 
card and slot for capabilities?

Let me know the card make and model and I'll check further.  I've had no 
problem using RAID under Windows (there's more driver support) or Linux 
now that the proprietary drivers from Promise have been incorporated 
into the latest releases.
