Ah! But it CAN matter very much. I do not know about Canada, but I
suspect the electric codes there are very much the same as here in the
US. Back at the main house input panel the Ground is tied to the white.
It is easily conceivable that the ground wire at an appliance could be
broken, disconnected etc. and then reversing the white and black could
cause the metal frame on an appliance to be hot. In this case touching
the metal case and such as a faucet could cause an easily fatal electric
shock! This is one of the reasons the code here REQUIRES that GFI
(ground fault indicator) outlets be installed where ever there is a
possibility ot that -garages, utility rooms, kitchens, bathrooms,
porches, etc. Therefore evapplianceh the appliance would work properly it
could be very dangerous.
