Holger, that is the whole point of all this discussion about backing up.
When ever one has his information stored on ANY media, it behooves one
to back that data to the later/latest media when it comes available.
For example:
Years ago we backed up to:
1. floppys.
2. Then we backed up to tapes.
3. Then we backed up to HDs.
4. Then we backed up to CDs.
5. Then we backed up to DVDs.
6. Now we back up to all of these medias with the possible exception of
Floppys.

As the industry keeps advancing it seems that any data that MUST be
saved for the future has to be repeatedly backed up to the latest media
as it becomes available or it may be subject to data loss.
And further that data MUST be rebacked up intermittently regardless of
the media used.
I, personally, have had data degradation using all the media above, with
HDS being the most reliable (until they also fail-which they
unfortunately often do).

Even the old paper data storage is/was subject to data loss. For
example, I lost virtually ALL of my color slides in 1998 when my house
was flooded - in addition to losing much paper work. fortunately my
computers were above the flood water level. Floods aren't the only loss
possibility. What about fires, tornados, tsunamis, etc.

Therefore, the only possibility is to keep all data (paper and
otherwise) as backed up as physically possible) and keep renewing all
older data that has been backed up and is important to the later/latest
methods.
