Holger, what is technically the proper use of electrical conductors
doesn't fly in the real world when the states regulations allowed the
use of "not so good" conductors for quite a number of years.

The connecting of aluminum wiring to convience outlets (with copper
metal fittings caused many fires because of the erosion of the aluminum
wires at the connection point thus creating loose connections, producing
heat and sometimes fires.

It was finally decided (at least here in Texas) that putting copper
pigtails on the aluminum house wiring using an antioxident at the
joint (or using a special wirenut with an antioxident in it) and
connecting those pigtails to the convience outlets was one of the most
practical and safest solution to the problem. Another was using CU/AL
convenience outlets. Both the special wire nuts and the CU/AL outlest were
very expensive in 1998 when my house was flooded. Copper pigtails
properly installed was one of the the most efficient and least expensive
method then.

Rewiring a residential building would be a VERY expensive proposition
considering that often times the wiring was stapled to studs inside the
walls thus not readily removed.
