Yes, I did.  Checking the receipt, it was at 4:23PM.  They may not have
advertised it well, and maybe the word didn't get out as they hoped.  In
any event, they still had a good number of the drives, "stacked out"
near the store entrance.  I didn't count them, but would say that they
still had at least 20 of them in-store and out, even at that hour.

A lot of that seems to have improved in recent years.  And it should
have, since that type stuff doesn't make for happy customers.  One red
flag for me is if they state in the ad that quantities are limited, or
say something like "minimum 5 per store" that is usually a good sign
that they will likely be sold out shortly after the store opens.

I was in a nearby Staples around noon on the day after Thanksgiving and
inquired about one of the specials- the fellow there told me they had
sold out of that item within the first hour the store was open.

People do crazy stuff when there are good deals in the offing.  My
wife works retail - for a department store in a large mall.  On "Black
Friday" the greedy bastids were opening the mall at 5am.  Her store, run
by even greedier bastids, was opening at 430am, so Sally had to be there
at 4am in order to prepare to open the store.  Because of the parking
crush, I took her to work that morning.  There were already people
loitering around before 4am, waiting for the stores to open.  Likewise,
there was a small croud waiting outside the local CompUSA at that hour,
and even across the street there were a dozen or so fools standing
around in front of the local Home Depot.

Of the "big box" stores that carry computer stuff, I think my least
favorite is Best Buy, based on the number of times I have found them
sold out of the items on special- - particularly memory sticks.  Seems
to me I have had the best luck with the office supply type stores, like
Office Depot and Staples. Back in FL, the OfficeMax was bad about not
having the special items out on the shelf -  I remember having to ask
about it a few years back when they had a CDRW on special, and they were
keeping them back in the stockroom.
