Kommentar till en text av JIM HOLSONBACK
Ärende: Mic & phones.
=====================
Hello Jim, nice talking to you !

        Joyeux No‰l to you too.

JH> Since Skype is a telephone via internet thing, I assume you have a
JH> headset which has two cable connectors - one for earphones and one for
 JH> microphone.

        Darn good assumption, Jim.

JH> By "top," I assume you mean the jack nearest the keyboard
JH> and mouse connectors. The motherboard is Gigabyte GA-7DX, Rev. 2.2
JH> which BICT was made exclusively for MicronPC, and you have since
JH> reflashed the BIOS, with the BIOS code from Gigabyte for another board
 JH> revision.

Amazing, we are in total agreement. Tee ! hee !

JH> There are only three jacks for sound on the back of the board. Top to
 JH> bottom, they are - -
JH> Green- Line Out - for connecting earphones or external amplified
 JH> speakers
JH> Blue- Line In - for connecting external output from cassette player,
JH> CD player, audio from VCR or etc.
JH> Pink- Microphone In - for connecting an external microphone.

Indeed these are so coloured and setup. After reading this
note of yours, I pulled the case forward and connected the headset
as: sound-top then bottom-mic and it all worked. I was able to
phone my Bro in Quebec City all 5 x 5. I did not succeed before as
I was trying to keep the stereo speakers connected on the top
    Green input.

JH> This is a different order from the audio jacks on my new "Christmas
JH> present" 'pooter, which has the green in the middle, next to the pink.

I did not know the colour coding and my putor room is still a
mess after all the redoing. I could not locate the pamphlet that
you also sent me on this Gigabyte MoBo. So, I asked.

JH> Also unlike my new 'pooter, there is no separate jack on the GA-7DX
JH> mobo for earphones. The only jack on the GA-7DX with Audio Out is the
JH> green jack, and that is where the earphones of your headset should
 JH> connect.

So, I only have one destination for audio, either the headset
or the speakers never both at the same time. I cn live with this.

JH> There is some talk in the manual from the Gigabyte website, about a
JH> "Creative CT5880 Sound Option" (pp 32-35), which describes using
JH> "4-speaker sound." Under this option, the Blue jack turns into an
JH> output to a second set of speakers.

Yes, I dimly rememeber reading some lines on this in the a/n
pamphlet but I was not interested and anyway, it would not help me
   get the two outputs.

JH> As far as special drivers, there may be one which is required for
JH> Skype, but the onboard AC97 sound should work just fine with your
 JH> headset's earphones and mike.

Now you know that it worked fine. There is no driver required
for Skype, the setup D/L PRG does it all. This had been quite
improved lately, no more feedback and no more lag in chatting.

 JH> For some test/troubleshooting, I'd
JH> recommend disconnecting your external speakers, attaching your headset
JH> to the green and pink jacks - - then, in Control Panel, under "Sounds
JH> and Audio Devices," check settings for the microphone under "Voice
JH> Recording" and then do some tests with using the "Test Hardware" button
JH> to make sure both the earphones and mike are working (this based on
JH> WinXP Home). Since you think something may be wrong, I'd say try this
JH> before more experimenting with Skype.

I did not have to test this, I tried Skype and all was fine
but to just ease my curiousity I went as instructed and did it, the
test was a confirmation of the setup.

JH> If you want to leave your speakers connected while using Skype, you
JH> may be able to do this by trying a stereo audio "splitter" (Y) cable.
JH> This may work, or may cause some impedance mismatch problems.

This Y is an option that I will consider. I do not know if the
cable would be available in store but this willy old Ham can sure
   build one.

JH> Good luck, and please let us know how your testing turns out.

No luck needed with these fine instructions. And for sure, I
would feedback to you as per usual. This reminds me... I wonder if
there is a "better" AMD that would fit this socket 10 ??? Like a 3
GHz one ? Or is this the top one for this MoBo and socket ? I
really do not want this if only for the fun ot if.

   Ho ! ho ! ho !
      Season's Greetings to all.
