Hmm.  Sounds like maybe a newer machine, with variable speed on the cpu
fan - - they run slow unless the cpu is hot or getting hot, then they
speed up.  Maybe by the time the fan gets the word to speed up, it is
too late.  Getting that dust out of there may well fix that problem.

As quiet as my new Christmas present system is, and with no breeze
coming out the back of the power supply, I suspect the power supply fan
on this machine is variable speed, too.  This one has a Phoenix bios,
and I can't find anything about cpu temperature and fan speed in setup.
Do you remember if Aida software which is able to show that information?

Reminds me of a "bargain" I recently found at a garage sale - - a
Gateway PIII-500 from Gateway.  Got the box plus a vga monitor and
keyboard all for the princely sum of $2.  I don't know where they had it
running, but _all_ of it was very dusty and dirty.  I started with a
shop vac inside the case, using the round brush attachment, which
wouldn't reach everywhere.  Next took it outside and switched the hose
on the shop vac to "blow" - - got most of it out.

I've used shop vac on "blow" to blow those out, without opening the
case.  In extreme cases in the past, I've even used a leaf blower!
Always on extremely dirty systems, of low value, like the $2 one I
talked about above.

As relayed by others, some sysop's system had a major hiccup. Now seems
to be over.
