For you English-as-a-second-language folks, that's "irking".  For the 
rest of you dweebs that simply can't/won't bother to spell, it's the 
same thing.  ;)

You really don't *need* software to set up the router as long as you can 
reach it in the first place (hence the reason they want you to use a 
wired computer to do the setup).  As long as your computer is set to 
defaults, other than the SSID, you should be able to connect.  Changing 
channels, SSID, WEP, etc. can all cause failures.

Also, some NICs (wireless, anyways) come with a program to use to do the 
connection.  I haven't seen one yet that is required but you need to get 
all the settings right by yourself.  I started out using the programs 
and have switched to the XP configuration tool.

This is one function that the proprietary software supplies that XP 
doesn't.  Those numbers should be in Kb/sec (kilobits, not bytes) which 
is about right.  You're using cable, not DSL, right?  My downloads 
obviously vary from the RoadRunner-rated 10Mb/sec., usually in the 
800-4000kb/sec. range but have been as high as 6000+ kb/sec.  Uploads 
are limited here to 384kb/sec so your 800 seems high.  I suppose that 
could depend on the ISP and exact modem.  On the internal network, I get 
much higher numbers but that doesn't seem to be what you're relating.

BTW, I check speeds by using a web browser (or command-line utility) and 
monitoring speeds.  I don't bother with the speed-check web sites since 
that doesn't necessarily represent reality any better than normal web 
browsing does.  If you had a straight connection to the site, speeds 
would be blisteringly fast while involving the WWW risks all sorts of 
delays.
