Ärende: duo core - what for?
============================
Hello JAY,

    On Thursday January 18 2007 at 10:18,
JAY EMRIE [1:123/140] wrote to GERALD MILLER,
about: duo core - what for?

 GM>>>> Since you're talking about True Image version 10 (Home ???), I

JE>>> Can't tell you right now, Gerald. I was using 10 to back up my
JE>>> laptop - which only has one DVD. Wont be able to tell you in the
JE>>> future either. None of my systems have more than one DVD. All
JE>>> desktops have a CDRW and a DVD RW drive.

JE> I can see no advantage in having two DVD drives. I do have a CDRW AND
JE> a DVD/RW in both my systems. Thinking about it I really do not believe
JE> there is much advantage in having both. The DVD RW will do everything.

After some more investigation, I have to agree with your belief -- the
DVDRW will do everything and having dual DVDRW on one machine doesn't make
good economic sense.

GM>> Since I'm in the process of building my "Screamer" machine, I was
GM>> wondering if it would be advantageous to have two DVD burners and
GM>> if TI would recognize multiple DVD burners and span the image
GM>> backups consecutively. Right now, I'm vacillating between the TI 10
GM>> Home and the TI 9.1 Workstation versions. Charles has me
GM>> (currently) leaning towards the Home version...

JE> I am using TI 10 home. Works just fine so far. Easier to use than the
JE> previous versions. The instructions are more lucid. I've been having
JE> indications that my backup HD was not operating properly lately.
JE> Couldn't sleep last night so I got up and replaced the HD,
JE> formatted it, installed TI 10 and started a backup. Woke up this AM
JE> and everything was just fine.

Sorry, I didn't intend for you to loose sleep over my questions. ;-))

GM>> I can't believe the DVD burners are so inexpensive - Liteon 18x
GM>> DVDRW (internal) for CDN $45.95. I paid almost three times that
GM>> much for a CDRW four years ago...

JE>>> The backup on the DVDs turned out to be faulty. One bad DVD I
JE>>> believe, (had a funny looking spot in the data area).

 GM>> Pity.

JE> One problem with DVD and TI backups. TI doesn't logically handle more
JE> than one DVD (DISK) back up. In doing a restore one has to start with
JE> backup DVD #1, then it calls for inserting backup DVD #2, then reverts
JE> to DVD #1 again and starts the actual back up. I really do not intend
JE> t o use DVDs for all backups. Just wanted a set for possible restoring
JE> to my beginning fully setup system. Will use a USB drive for ensuing
 JE> backup operations.

This doesn't make sense to me (of course, everyone knows I require things
to be explained in "black and white"). If TI will only backup to one DVD
disk, why, upon a restore, does it ask for multiple disks (or am I
misunderstanding your explanation)?

GM>> Since all three of my computers have drive caddies for the OS, I
GM>> will be cloning the OS drives; use my Maxtor 250GB, Maxtor 300GB
GM>> and Seagate 320GB HDD in USB cases for image backups. Right now, I
GM>> imagine that burning to DVD/CD would rarely be used -- maybe for
 GM>> essential, individual applications.

GM>> Norton Ghost behaved rather strangely for me, at the beginning of
GM>> the New Year. Mrs. Santa (my loving wife), gave me a NEC 20" LCD
GM>> monitor for Christmas. I removed the old Princeton 19" CRT monitor
GM>> and replaced it with the NEC and I was going to Ghost all my drives
GM>> on the WXP. Ghost loaded and after twenty minutes of the hour
GM>> glass being displayed on the screen, I came to the conclusion that
GM>> there was something wrong; so I abandoned the Ghost procedure on
GM>> the WXP (that particular day). This morning, I decided to try
GM>> Ghost on the W2K machine *AND* I was successful. I can't figure
GM>> this one out -- why a DOS boot disk of Norton Ghost works on one
GM>> machine and not the other? I'll have to give the WXP machine
GM>> another Ghost try tomorrow morning...

JE> I gave up on Ghost when I discovered TI. Nothing inherently wrong with
JE> Ghost - Just that TI is more capable - far more feature rich.

Again, it looks like I have agree with you in regards to Ghost and that TI is a
more favorable / capable program. More about this topic at a later point in
time.

           Thanks ... Gerald
