Whiner.  ;)

This a two part answer - one based on pixels as the computer determines 
them and the other as the display sees them.

1) From the computer standpoint, there's just more X and Y pixels.  The 
result is that you get more information displayed on the screen, 
regardless of size.  This gives you more desktop space because things 
are smaller (icons are 32x32 pixels regardless of display resolution).

2) The display shows the extra pixels as smaller dots.  On a CRT, that 
means fewer red, green and blue phosphor dots are illuminated for any 
given pixel (makes the pixel size smaller).  On and LCD, things change 
since there are no phosphor dots but, rather, individual "LEDs" (yes, I 
know that's wrong, it's just an analogy) that glow.

The reason I push for maximum resolution is that I don't care what size 
the icons are - they're just icons.  Smaller means I can display more of 
them or arrange them more easily.  If I couldn't read the text (do I 
need to?), I'd just increase the text size.  With an LCD monitor, using 
a larger pixel (as determined by the computer) means more than one "LED" 
must be light per picture but not necessarily an even multiple - how do 
you light up 1.5 pixels on the monitor?  This causes the display to be 
less clear since you're mismatching computer pixel size with LCD pixel size.

Not exactly short, sorry...
