That's primarily because there was enough info on more complex web sites 
that you needed to enlarge the screen from the default 640x480.  These 
days, many sites suggest 1024x768 for the same reason.

The suggestion I have is to increase the screen resolution by only one 
step at a time.  It takes time to get used to the new resolution's 
appearance and too big a jump makes folks want to run away screaming.

Don't mix Apples and Macs.  ;)  LCD displays, due to their nature, don't 
flicker at 60Hz.  CRT monitors do because the phosphors react more 
quickly and fade somewhat at that speed.  CRTs are known for flicker, 
LCDs are known for smearing of the image when it changes quickly (which 
is why you see response times listed as part of their specs).

You change speeds by using the Display control panel.  Click on the 
Settings tab and then the Advanced button.  Choose the Monitor tab.  If 
there's an INF file present for your monitor, you should see the 
monitor's name listed; otherwise, you get a generic replacement.  By 
default, the only speed listed for an LCD is 60Hz. unless you un-check 
the "Hide modes" selection.

It can but there's no need.  I don't know if a higher refresh rate is 
somehow detrimental to an LCD display.  I doubt it but...
