It depends.  It's not like the display is useless at any other 
resolution than native but it's not as clear since a pixel for that 
lower resolution may try to be, say, 1.5 pixels wide - there's no way to 
do that so you light up two cells.  That leads to a less than crisp 
display.  If it's crisp enough for you, so be it.

Note that in a DOS world (or a DOS app that's full screen), there's a 
basic inability to easily set the display to full resolution.  You may 
need something like 60 lines per screen (just a SWAG - I have no real 
idea) to approximate that resolution.

That's exactly the reason I've always heard when folks tell me why the 
don't want to use a higher resolution.  My question is, why does a large 
icon make a difference?  If one has very poor eyesight, I can see that 
(no pun) but one should also be checking into the Accessibility control 
panel to help with the display.  Like a large desk, I prefer to have 
lots of room to put things and to be able to find things easily.  When 
you have a small desk, even arranging things carefully can lead to no 
extra space.  I know approximately where that icon is - I don't need to 
have it staring in my face.  If it's just the text that you need to see 
to pick the icon, enlarge it as appropriate.

But that's only part of the issue.  The higher resolution means you get 
to see much more on-screen at one glance.  Spreadsheets are now seen 
full width (or more nearly so), web sites require no sideways scrolling 
and word processing docs can be seen as a whole page.  Obviously, this 
doesn't fit all needs - I still zoom in on things for fine print, etc. 
but it's something that I need only sometimes.  Working with digital 
images is TONS easier when I can easily see the whole thing while 
working on it.  Yep, sometimes I need to zoom in but not always.

Your eyesight is what matters, not my preferences.  My suggestion is to 
use the configurability to see if you can find a happy blend of size and 
resolution that works for you.  Like so many other things in life, just 
because that's the way it's always been done doesn't mean that there 
isn't a better way.  You, of course, need to be the one defining "better"...
