Cloning in Acronis means an exact sector by sector copy of the
original.  No compression used.  When you clone a 40 Gb drive to
another 40 Gb or larger drive it creates an exact copy of the
original.

Making an image of your drive involves using compression and is much
faster.  Acronis skips those areas of the drive which have no data and
likewise will not copy the pagefile to the image.  A full 40 Gb drive
will image to around 20 Gb or so using high compression.

Yes you do, but with the provisions I outlined above.

That's where I'm not sure.  You can direct the image by specifying
where it is to go before proceeding.  I know that works OK when making
an image - I'm just not sure if it would work the same way during a
clone copy.  Make a couple of test runs with disposable data before
you do anything final.
