There has been interest over the years for running Mac OS on PCs...
there was lots of interest prior to official release of the Intel Macs,
when unlocked betas of Intel Mac OS X were making it onto the Net, and
hackers were working hard on finding ways to install it onto non-Apple
hardware.

Apple has been able to make sure that the release versions of their OS
no longer run on anything but their hardware.

Emulation software for a long time had the problem that in order to
work, users needed to get an image file of a Mac ROM... which meant
starting with a working Mac.

For instance, there's an open source project named Basilisk II which
effectively emulates old (pre-1994) 680x0 Macs-- as long as you're able
to get a ROM image from one of these older systems. It works well--
emulating an old Mac and running old Mac system and application software
faster than they would run on the original hardware.

The same team has a more recent project (SheepShank, or something
similar) to emulate more recent, more powerful PowerPC Macs, which is
aided by the fact that Apple moved the ROM code from a physical EPROM
chip to software and included updated software ROMs with some of the OS
install CDs... but I've never managed to get it to work.

However, the reality is that as a minority-platform in a mostly Windows
world, Mac users are going to run into situations where they sometimes
need Windows-only applications far more often than Windows users are
going to need Mac-only applications.
