Hello All!

Upgraded to Windows Vista Premium from Windows XP MCE.

Machine: Gateway GT5032
         AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4200+
         2 Gig RAM
         Dual Monitor System, 512m Video Memory.

Ran upgrade advisor, uninstalled NERO OEM per instructions.

Upgrade went relatively smoothly, took about 2 hours from start to finish.

Issues:

4NT version 8.0, had to re-enter registration key.

Digital Desktop Clock and Digital desktop stickers wouldnt work, uninstalled.

Zaep, Antispam product, loses registration after reboot, but will re-accept it,
support ticket openned with developer.

AVG 7.5 w/firewall, Firewall wont launch, AV resident shield wont launch,
support ticket openned with developer, I will more than likely switch to
Kapersky since they already have developed Vista compatibility.

(Other than that, AVG is functional)

Multiplicity, a program to allow me to control the Vista computer from the XP
one, wont accept connection, ticket openned with developer.

CYGWIN was broken by Vista, downloaded the very latest version cured it.

Robotask, a task scheduler was broken, developer update cured.

Freemeter Pro, also broke, downloaded the beta, cured it.

Fingerprint sensor software broke.

My personal reading node for Fidonet (1:123/456)

Not a single thing was broken, tosser, binkd and reader all working.

Performance..

Programs launch seems real snappy, they were as well under prior OS, but they
seems smoother and dont appear to be thrashing the disk.

Now it does take a bit longer to boot up.

There was no pressing need for me to upgrade, I didnt have to, other than I
wanted to be able to speak to this new OS from a first person perspective,
given the nature of my job, I will be selling this OS and machines with the OS
installed on it.

If you buy a new machine, there is nothing about this OS that should stymie
you, other than the user access control, which will nag you to death when you
enter into administrative functions of the OS or try to launch programs M$
didnt recognize the signature of, in my case I turned UAC off.

Now before the Tom Walkers come out and decry UAC, I might add that UAC is
exactly the thing Windows needs for the computer illiterate, for those whom
seem to be magnets for all the malware out there.

UAC is however annoying, but a necessary annoyance.

Remember, some of the underlying architecture for Windows has changed, some
programs will be broken, while others will not be, any mission critical
applications you need to use, make sure the developer has patches available
before you take the plunge, but no one says you have to upgrade, XP will be
around for a bit longer and will probably have a much longer product life than
what Win95/98 enjoyed.

Remember only upgrade if you want to, there isnt anything that says you have
to.

The issues I ran into, par for course, I expected some issues, majority of
which I resolved by re-inserting a registration key, changing a setting or
checking the developers web site.

Word of mouth opinions regarding Vista are useless, they are being spewed like
urban legends and can only be judged by running it for yourself.

If you decide to upgrade, make sure you obtain the upgrade advisor.
