i remember someone pointing to counterspy at one time several years ago... i
took a look at it and wrote a review of it on w98se... it wasn't an excellent
review but it wasn't a totally bad review, either...

anyway, when i got it, i also signed up for their newsletter... i've been
reading when it comes in about once a month... they've completely rewritten
the engine for the latest version and i had occasion to work with it on a
friend's XP box that was infested with 3 virus/worms and four spyware
things... one of those virus/worms was also seen by counterspy as a spy device
and removed, which was great... counterspy found and eliminated everything
that was found except for one li'l niggle...

i even went so far as to check out ewido which was bought by AVG... i've had
occasion, about a year ago, to use the original ewido on another friend's
machine to clean it of cruft (pr0n popups) that counterspy didn't find or
remove... ewido helped on this machine because i was evicting webroot spy
sweeper as a total unknown (to me), because it was requesting $$$ for
updates and because it wasn't finding and erradicating those popups... in
otherwords, like so much other cruft out there, i suspected webroot spy
sweeper was simply commercialized and retailed leakage from an anal orifice...

anyway, back to this episode... both counterspy and ewido reported a clean
system but i still had one nagging POS in the system tray that was telling
"spyware has been detected on your system. click here to go to blahblah"... i
knew this was pure fecal material and finally resorted the silentrunners vbs
script which showed me two identical entries in two registry keys... one key
being something akin to "delayed startup" which lit me up like a firebomb...
delayed startup?? what the h377?? no way! this is evidently the one that was
restarting the baddie after i had successfully knocked it out once or twice
before... once i manually killed those two registry entries, that box was
deemed clean!

i don't know how ewido has changed since it was purchased by avg... on this
machine i was in the process of evicting the avg anti virus software,
anyway... i had a real good laugh when i found out that ewido was now an avg
package...

in any case, i will recommend counterspy and the free silentrunners script
because i've worked with them... as long as avg doesn't majorly mess ewido up,
i'll recommend it, too... however, i still don't know anything about webroot
spy sweeper other than it has failed more than once that i'm personally aware
of...
