i was thinking that XP might have detected the two hidden system files and
command.com if tom had possibly formatted the drive with the /S option to make
it bootable...

sure, send them on over... i'll see what i can make of them... it is possible
that they are buffered where you need unbuffered or visa versa... it could even
be a clock speed rating or similar... anyway, sure... send'em on... if nothing
else, i can make them into some kind of artwork O:^)

eeewww... definitely need one of those jewels!

i've looked that disk over that you sent and it is rather like tom described...
you did good with what you got... i ended up going over there and spending a
day or two and grabbing everything i could find related to w98se... ended up
making a chart with their dates of release so as to try to be able to apply
them in issue order... this box i'm on now i let go thru automatically and for
some reason, it keeps wanting to get one patch over and over and over... it
gets it and applies it and we reboot with all indicators pointing to success...
until the next time we check for critical updates and then it wants to get it
all over again...

now, i should also explain that this box is running from a cloned drive... it
wouldn't boot one day after i had to power it off when it locked up... it came
back up saying that windows had to be reinstalled... not even safemode would
come up... so i cloned the drive to another and put that one in so i still have
the original... then i proceeded to install w98se over the top and then started
applying the patches automatically from windows update... one of the first to
go in was the update to IE6 and that's where this incessant patch is supposed
to also be applied... i've finally just turned off the critical updates
notifier and the scheduler since i don't use or need them if all they're going
to do is eat memory and continually try to apply a patch that is obviously not
going in like it should... one day, i'll take that original drive and clone it
again and try installing the patches in issue order to see if that one also
ends up in the same boat... until then, it sits in a safe box wrapped in
antistatic waiting...
