ok... just a reminder that this problem is with applying KB837009... here's the
files involved and the results of my manual search and compare...

yes, there's two msident.dll as indicated by #2 above... both have the exact
same size as the one in this fixpack, 44032 bytes... however, i'm not sure what
the VCM directory is all about or why the newer one (7-Apr-2006) has a lesser
revision number (.1106 vs .1123)...

at this point, i'm not sure what to do other than to see if i can manually
replace (while saving it) the one in the SYSTEM directory with the one in the
VCM directory since the one in VCM is the one that this updates appears to put
in place... other than the date on it, that is...

i'm also thinking that i mshould run a search on the registry to see if i can
locate any mention of it by filename and see what it may say...

then maybe i'll rerun the update and see what happens...

errgh... msident.dll is listed in the registry... 

HKCR\CLSID\{a9ae6c91-1d1b-11d2-b21a-00c04fa357fa} is the key for "LW
Identities" which specifically calls the dll located in SYSTEM

and again in 

HKLM\Software\CLASSES\CLSID\{a9ae6c91-1d1b-11d2-b21a-00c04fa357fa} which i
expected...

and in...

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\VersionConflictManager which also tells me what the VCM
directory is for! now to figure out how to get it to restore it... there is
definitely a key for msident.dll in this section...

ha! ok... you run the version conflict manager from the system info tool...
wow... there's a lot of files listed in there... looks like most of them are
from when i reloaded over the top of the crashed stuff... i've told it to
restore that one and will see what happens now ;)
