ahhh... so using OE to get your gmail email is a new thing...

sounds like you only got one half of the total OE configuration done... the
missing half is for the SMTP server setup... it, too, uses a nonstandard port
and my even require a specific setting for the encrypted channel to be used...
i don't recall what my settings are for thunderbird but i use thunderbird for
my regular ISP provided accounts, my own mail server accounts and my gmail
accounts... yes, i have quite a few accounts on numerous servers and i read
everything right here on one of these machines using thunderbird O:)
