Ärende: XP Success story + A Catch

The motherboard on the XP-SP2 computer my wife and son use started
failing a while ago-- we wondered what was beeping all the time. Over
the past few days, the beeping increased; finally I was able to get no
video signal out-- I tried 4 different AGP cards and a PCI one.

Taking the system to my friendly neighbourhood clone computer shop
(really-- I like those guys a lot), they checked my power supply, and
tried my CPU and RAM in a different motherboard... everything seemed to
work, so we put the replacement motherboard (with my CPU and RAM) into
my case, and plugged stuff in.

The new motherboard had built-in video, sound, and network (which the
old one had lacked), and while it was clear that the system was working
(unlike previously), the chipset (etc) was so different, that Windows
wasn't starting up.

I took it home, thinking I might have to end up reinstalling everything
from scratch.

But I was pleasantly surprised to find that the Repair option on the XP
Install CD worked!

-- Not the first Repair option that makes reference to Console mode... 
instead, I picked the option to Install XP; it then checked, reported
that there was an existing installation and offered to repair it... in
doing so, it reinstalled a bunch of files, checked the hardware, etc,
but left all installed applications, settings, and user data intact.
Just the way it was supposed to.

However, doing that left me without all the Windows Updates since the
SP2 release. I manually updated to IE7 using an IE7 install file I had
around.

And here's the wierd thing. I can run Windows Update or the optional
Microsoft Update. It finds 73 or so 'critical' updates, some optional
ones, and one hardware one... but if I click on any of the links in the
left-hand frame-- including the Install link, instead of getting the
list of updates for review in the main IE frame, I get the earlier
frameset to choose between Custom and (whatever the default option is)
again. The whole Windows Update frameset nested within that single
frame... I suspect I could continue and get smaller and smaller versions
of the Windows Update page.

Kind of cool, but also useless.

(At the moment, having the Automatic Updates feature turned on, that
option is busy installing all the missing updates...)

Any ideas re. the Windows Updates wierdness?
