Ärende: winme gave me scare

I had a little incident with my main WinME pc the other day.  The situation 
had me seriously considering installing XP (yikes!).   Here's what 
happened.. suddenly Explorer (the directory navigator/viewer) would just 
stall or slow to a crawl. There would be a long delay before Explorer would 
actually respond with the contents.  Actually, this has been a standard 
behaviour of Explorer over the last few years.  Usually the slow/delay 
problem occurs after I've accessed my USB-connected network drive on the XP 
pc - but NOT always.  I could usually wait for the Explorer to recover and 
repopulate the screen.  But sometimes the whole screen "blinks" and suddenly 
I lose the various apps that are loaded in the taskbar! I can usually live 
with that too. The computer would still continue to work OK.  My guess is 
that Explorer simply does something stupid with ram memory causing my 
various taskbar-loaded apps to vanish.  All this would precipate only after 
accessing a shared network drive several times.

Yesterday, the above re-occured (as usual, or so I thought), but when I 
decided to Restart, the computer only rebooted to 16 colours!  OK, fine, I 
thought..  I can simply re-adjust the resolution back to the proper setting. 
However, after another Restart to apply the changes, I got a Windows error 
message telling me that the files for driving the display may be corrupt or 
need replacing.  Ok, fine.. I reinstall the video drivers - process goes 
well, but at reboot I got the same message OR the screen would load blank. 
I could tell that the computer completed proper bootup (I'm familiar with 
the various sounds and timing as apps get loaded), but the screen would be 
blank all that time.  I swapped monitors, but the same behaviour occurred 
with the replacement monitor.

It is at that point I started thinking.. I guess I would be better off with 
XP.

As a last idea, I decided to change the video card back to an old one that 
was previously installed.  Computer booted up fine with that!   But I still 
lose some of the apps in the taskbar after I've accessed the shared network 
drive with Explorer.

The pc has 768meg ram (one original 256mb + a new 512mb), 1GHz, 120meg hdd.
