True enough but there's the extra RAM it takes for each compiled in
driver. Is it worth worrying about? Probably not.

Don't worry 'bout me - I'm fairly new to Linux (~1.5 years) but an old
hand at Unix (started with SunOS 3.5 in the late '80s). I've compiled
kernels way before Linux.

Agreed *except* that most major updates (not dot (.) releases but the
first digit changes) require fresh installs according to most
knowledgeable folks (just read this in eWeek, as a matter of fact). I
don't upgrade Windows and I don't upgrade Linux. I do save /etc and any
other customizations so I don't have to reinvent the wheel (although
it's amazing to me how much can change from from one release to another
that causes old configs to not work properly - suspend and sound are
ones I've been battling recently).

To me, that's a problem - there should also be live DVDs, not just CDs.
Too much is left out due to space restrictions with a CD. I'd
download the CD first to see what works and then download the DVD if
needed. I suspect an awful lot of folks would do the same, if it were
available.

I started with Unix early enough that I was able to view it as "DOS on
steroids" - lots of commands with options to dazzle the mind. I enjoyed
the learning curve. I view Windows' use of binary configuration files
as "invented by the devil". I'm also comfortable at the commandline as
well as the GUI - one shouldn't let the presence or absence of an
environment be an obstacle. It's just different.

Until relatively recently (new computer), I was running on 9GB drives
and having no real reason to need larger ones. Even with the "new"
(it's 2.5 years old now) computer, I got 80GB drives to populate my RAID
array. 240GB is plenty, even with XP and Linux loaded as well as doing
a lot more digital imaging than before. I did run out of room on a
small (75GB) partition when I was scanning in my slides and negatives
spanning 15 years but that was easily resolved by moving files to other
places. (Side note - I now don't need the extra partitioning due to
drivers in the Windows and Linux spaces for ext2/3 and NTFS,
respectively.)

I'm willing to do it either way. Other than data lost, it's no problem.
Since I now have the file system drivers, it's less of an issue than
ever. I can boot either OS and work on the other - now THAT'S the best
of both worlds... ;)
