Sounds like a good plan. However i would think you cannot install
linspire on /dev/hdb because Linux can only have one root "/"
partition. I would just copy it lock stock and barrel to
/dev/hdb and during the setup give hdb a seperate mount
point, say for instance /mnt/linspire.

I could be wrong about this point but I'm trying save you the
grief of losing any work you wish to keep. Linux is always
learning experience and if you can preserve earlier work
it can be very rewarding to go back and see what scripts and
other things like downloads you did before.

Gparted. Resize you're old Linux partitions to what you a learned
by experience to be more appropriate. If you like the way they are
then Gparted is not required. Just write down the mount points
on a piece of paper for example / /usr /home /local.

When you go to install Kubuntu just select "Use Linux partitions"
or what ever it says. Now you must decide which which portions
to format. For a clean install root "/" and "/usr" and if you have
it "/var" _must_ be formatted, "/home" is optional but preferable
to do as well. Move any work you wish to keep to a natural
partition such as "/opt" or "/local"

EXT3 is now standard. If the partitions you wish to keep are EXT2
just leave them alone. They will probably be converted during the
install process.

I'm sorry i haven't answered this sooner but i have been traveling.
My preferred option for a new install is to use something like 
Gparted and reassess my partitioning regime including XP.

I expanded XP and used what i've learned to make my Linux
partitions more afficiant.

There we are...back on topic. ;)
