Ärende: annoyance of "activation"
=================================
SD> Let me give you a word of warning about upgrading ME to XP. Back when I
 SD> was
SD> actively working for a tech support monkey for Sears TeleServ, Microsoft
 SD> issued
SD> us a memo saying that they did NOT recommend doing a DOS-based Windows to
 SD> a
SD> NT-based Windows upgrade. Why? Within three months' time, the DOS-based
SD> device drivers that didn't get upgraded would get unstable, causing the
 SD> entire
 SD> system to fark.
....
SD> once upgraded ME to W2K and within four months, the system became
 SD> incredibly
 SD> unstable.

Ah.. good point. the article you referenced was illuminating too. I
completely forgot about the FAT32/NTFS "issues" as well. I would
ultimately prefer an NTFS'd XP system. So.. even if I were to upgrade from
ME to XP, I would have to retain FAT32 inorder to maintain the option to
revert back to ME if serious problems occured (which you say could develop
after a few months of use). And once I switch to NTFS, there is no turning
back. The fine folks in the ME ng's also recommend fresh installs of XP
instead of a "upgrade".

SD> My personal recommendation: backup all your data and programs if possible,
 SD> blow
SD> the drive and do a complete fresh install. You'll thank yourself later
 SD> for it.

A fresh XP (and NTFS) install seems to be the right way to go. But I would
still have the problem of porting my ME apps and files to the XP system. It
looks like I would need a second computer to accomplish the transfer.

But if I need a physical 2nd computer, I'm thinking why not just migrate to
a Ubuntu system on that. For the most part, I can live with open-source
versions of Windows equivalents. I'd miss Wordperfect for sure. And I'd
miss SemPoint for the occassional preference of pulling in fidonet stuff via
..PKT. I'd miss a few other wonderful (and free) winapps such as
Audiograbber. There are a few others, I'm sure. :(

 SD> I don't anything higher than W2K; I've never needed the Fisher-Price
 SD> inspired
SD> desktop or the slight amount of extra goodies XP offers over W2K
 SD> (remember, I
SD> use it for business use also and don't play games on the system, so I'm
 SD> slightly biased).

I don't play games either. Well.. maybe except one, but it hardly needs
high performance: Myst. I purchased later editions of the game via eBay a
few years ago and never got to play them yet! They need XP. Hey.. I just
realized that I could do that on my new (used) Thinkpad! Other than that,
my ME pc is just for photos, music and some business stuff. I like your
phrase "Fisher-Price inspired desktop". My sentiments too. I immediately
switched to "classic" view on my Thinkpads XP when it arrived.

I have quite the dilema. I can choose to live with the potential
intermittent "surprise" that my ME pc develops (primarily a refresh problem
with Explorer.exe right now - and save a pile of money. Or.. I need to
spend more $ for a 2nd pc for the purposes of migrating AWAY from Millenium
Edition whether I choose to use Ubuntu or XP.

HEY... this talking-it-out exercise has given me another idea! As I write
this, I'm at my Thinkpad! Duh.... I could "port" over my favourite
work-related winapps to this TP. The photos and my music collection could
be handled by Ubuntu. I really don't need to convert my existing ME pc to
XP at all. I could just install Ubuntu on my old desktop!

Hmmm.

Thanks friend for inspiring me to "think" this through better!
