I found out most of my problems with certain video clips or audio clips not
playing or recording had to do with the lack of a proper codec.  For example -
I subscribe to several sites that provide streaming video\audio on a regular
basis.  One of the sites is not compatible with WMP 9, 10, or 11.  The audio at
DSL speeds is garbled and too fast. (Like the old chipmunks music)  But the
same site is OK when using Media Player Classic.

The second site is OK with both WMP 9, 10, 11, and Media Player Classic.  Go
figure.  I downloaded and installed a handy small program called "Codec
Detective" which is provided as part of a larger download of a free codec pack.
 The program will let you know if a codec is missing or if a wrong one is being
used.

However, unless a streaming video site provides the correct stream format, no
amount of codec installation or juggling is going to work. The site with the
problem I mentioned above displays the same symptoms on other machines I tried
it on.  It's clearly a problem on their end.
