Concidering what isa onthe Exchange laptops NO it was not cheaper. BUT
this is a simple portable Wordprocessing station basicly. I didn't need
2 gig of memory, Dual Core CPU, 250 Gig HD, or the DVD Burner. So the
overall price I paid was about $75 less out of pocket.
Althouhg while that that price was of little concern I really wanted a
Win XP machine. I concider the extra BLOAT of Win Vista, Ignoring the
problems, as jsut Unessary Silliness and Frills.
I have my comp of Wordperfect 8 loaded so it is almost ready to go.
And as soon as I put a couple more little programs on it, Like
IRFanView, the TI Image wil be done.
The El Cajon Library has WiFi and I wil be dsropping by there to play
with that feature a little more.
I did park in front of a Friends and use his, AFTER PERMISSION was
given, and tested the Thruput by trying to download a large program.
It settled out at about 17K transfer rate.
I have a Retired Pac Bell friend pushing me to get DSL also but with my
distance from the Switching 348K is al I can be guranteed.
IFR I ever go broadband that may be it as I jsut canot see more then
Twice the price to get Cable Broadband. I don't currently have3 CAble
TV so I would have to pay Extra to the cable company for not having it
to get the broadband Connection. And I have ABSOLUTLY NO interest in
Cable TV right now. That view could change id the Digital Conversion
happens in my Lifetime. The conversion by the way could make soem BIG
changes in the Broadband market. As the entire 70 Mhz band currently
used by UHF over the air stations will be dedicated toi Broadband
Internet and other High speed data uses.
In the October 2 PC Magazine there is a Doomsday Editorial by Lance
Ulanoff about what cound happen if the FCC allows Google to buy ALL the
frequencies at the auction. And they have enough money ot do it If they
want to as it is doubtful that Verision, AT&T or Sprint could survive a
bidding war.
