Most users-- regardless of operating system-- are wary of trying something new
with their computers. To a large extent, their caution is justified, since
there is often something unexpected that happens that will cause them problems
that they won't know how to deal with.

For instance, in the past 2 weeks, I've helped 3 different households connect a
wireless router to their broadband connections. Two of them were Mac users, one
a Windows system.

In theory, this should just be a case of plugging the router into their cable
or DSL modem, plugging the computer into the router, and it should work--
letting them get messy with optional security settings afterwards.

However, making it work with my friend's ADSL connection required either
contacting the phone company's tech support (to change the MAC address they had
on record) or spoofing their computer's MAC address on the router- we did the
later, and it worked fine, quick and easy... but if he was on his own, all he
know was that it wasn't working.

When we went to set encryption, I realized that his wife's older laptop had
only 802.11b, and that it didn't support WPA, only WEP... again, something that
was not a big deal for me, but would have been beyond his current level of
understanding.

People are happy to use computers-- Macs or Windows-- with procedures that are
comfortable to them... but when they try to go beyond that, the waters get deep
fast!
