It's been several years since I've used a Palm-style device with any
regularity-- I have a Handspring Visor Prism (colour, 8 MB Palm clone) sitting
in a drawer, more or less abandoned. When I was using it regularly, I kept a
bunch of sci-fi short stories and even a few novels on it, for reading on the
bus, in doctor's waiting rooms, etc. I found it a relatively usable experience,
with several different options.

-- There are PDF-format readers from Adobe that work OK
-- There are a number of Palm-doc (not to be confused with MS Word 
*.doc) file format readers-- both free, and relatively low cost. I tried a
couple of them, and didn't find huge differences. (I'm not going to fire up the
Visor to see what I was using, since the battery is, I'm sure, worn out and it
would take too long to charge it up).

Readability is MUCH better on the colour devices than on the older (or
low-cost) monochrome Palms, where text is displayed as dark grey against a
light grey screen.

Personally, I'm waiting for Apple to open up the iPhone/iPod Touch platform,
which will hopefully be announced at the January 14th MacWorld in a week.... I
have an iPod Touch, and think it's very high-res screen will make an excellent
eBook reader.
