In general, the Mac OS is less prone to get clogged up over time than Windows,
but if he's installed a bunch of programs that run at start up, he may find
that start up is slower than he remembers... he COULD check the list of things
running at start up and remove the ones he doesn't really need.

He received a set of CDs (or DVDs) with his Mac when he first purchased it--
assuming he can locate them, he could use them to restore his Mac to
just-like-new state at any time... of course, before doing so, he should make
sure that his data is backed up so it can be restored afterwards!

All of these sorts of things take time, effort, and learning- whether for Mac
or Windows.

Your son, instead, seems to enjoy throwing money on high-end Mac hardware every
couple of years-- he's the kind of consumer that companies love. Since he seems
to have a well-paying job, and little interest in learning about his computer,
buying a new one may be his best option. (I'll be happy to take the old,
grunged up one if there are no family members in line for it).
