On all machines?  Are the settings the same on all, especially relative 
to the local network (in ZoneAlarm, the whole subnet would be 
"trusted")?  A quick test - try to ping the Vista machine.  If that 
works, the firewall should be fine.

Those are the file system permissions.  Each share can be set to have 
certain permissions (you set this in the Sharing tab where you 
originally created/allowed the share) but the file system has it's own 
settings, which may supercede those allowed by the share.  Right-click 
on the folder (the C: drive from My Computer or whatever Vista calls it) 
and choose the Sharing and Security choice, then click on the Security 
tab.  If you want everyone to have full access to the whole drive, 
select the Everyone (the whole world) or Users (authenticated users) and 
click on the Full Control check box at the top of the choices.  As long 
as the share has the full control selection, the NTFS permissions will 
likely be sufficient and will be safer than allowing everyone to be able 
to access and write to all files/folders.  If there are specific folders 
that need special permissions, set those by themselves to preserve 
security and sanity.

Note that the users on the remote machines need accounts on the Vista 
machine unless Vista supports "Simple File Sharing" , which is 
Win95-style sharing, and is enabled.  On XP, you would change that 
through the Folder Options control panel or Tools, Options and then the 
View tab from any Explorer window.  At the bottom of the dialog box, 
scroll down till you see the Simple Sharing choice.  I always turn it 
off.  BTW, on XP, that's the only way to easily set NTFS permissions - 
use of Simple File Sharing takes away that Security tab so you can't set 
permissions.  Don't know if Vista works the same way.
